Scientific Glass

Scientific glass is used by every laboratory across the globe. From simple boiling flasks and beakers to the most complex reactors, there are many different pieces of glass used in scientific processes to make the products we use every day.

Also known as laboratory glass, it is almost always made of borosilicate glass because of its ability to withstand high and low temperatures and resistance to thermal shock.  The raw material of borosilicate glass is manufactured in rod and tube form. It is then molded and shaped with a gas and oxygen fire.  The most common gases used are hydrogen, propane, and natural gas.  Once the glass vessel is formed it is placed in an annealing oven and held at a temperature of at least 565 degrees Celsius for a period of 30 minutes or more.  It is then allowed to cool gradually, the curing process restores the integrity of the glass which is compromised when the glass is worked in the flame.

The scientific glass industry can be very demanding. Mid-Rivers Glassblowing specializes in meeting the needs of every industry when it comes to scientific glassware. Our team can help design, fabricate, modify, and repair most glassware.
